On behalf of Indian Buddhist Society Toronto, Canada and members, I would like to congratulate both of these young men for their achievements in the most important fields of our life: Education and Sports.

In addition, I would appreciate and congratulate their parents to support their children to reach such highest level. Not only their parents are proud of them; the whole community is proud of them. Insan and Jasvir great leaders in their areas of expertise which will encourage our youngsters to follow their footsteps and be successful in their life mission.

Also, I applaud  Ambedkartimes.com for highlighting such encouraging information that will certainly give a great direction to today’s youngsters and encourage them to follow such young intelligent future of our community. Once again, all the best to Insan and Jasvir.

Insan Achieved Second Position in Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana Left: Insan and Right: Dr. S. L. Virdi with his wife Banso Devi Lecturer and both sons

Phagwara: Insan, student of Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana, has bagged second position in Panjab University, Chandigarh in the B.A. LLB (Hons.) 1st Semester Examination, result declared on 27 March, 2008. He secured 373/500 (74.6%) marks. Insan also won the Diamond Jubilee Moot Court Competition organised by Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana during session 2007-2008 and was also elected as best mooted in the same. 18 years Insan believe that Man is grieved due to ignorance and ignorance can be ended only by gaining knowledge. Insan believe in gaining more and more knowledge to contribute for ending the sorrows of the sufferers in the interest of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity & Justice. It is pertinent to mention here that Insan is son of famous writer Dr. S. L. Virdi Advocate and Banso Devi Lecturer who have written various books for Social Justice and Human Rights including Dalit History of India and Dalit History of Punjab. It is pertinent to mention here that Insan is the younger brother of Mr. Manav, who is also the topper of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

Krishna Chandra Thakur Smriti Raksha Committee in collaboration with the Bangla Dalit Sahitya Sanstha organized the Krishna Chandra Thakur Memorial Lecture in a historical hall of central Calcutta (Tripura Hitsadhini Sava) in the afternoon of the 28th June, 2008. This memorial lecture was given by Dr. Pushpa Bairagya on the subject of ‘ The creators and their creation of the Matua Sangits’ which is nothing but an exclusive form of songs created by the dalits and are sung by the dalits also.

This stream of songs gives the expression of spiritual attainments and material achievements of the dalits of both east Bengal and west Bengal and particularly related to the Namashudra community people. It is a known fact that the Matura is a religious cult and the founder of this cult was Sri Sri Harichand Thakur. He was born in a remote village of east Bengal in the year 1812. He instructed his disciples to be anti-Vedic in religious performances and anti-casteist in social relations. The seminar hall was not a very big one; however, it was full to the brim . The person who was remembered in the meeting, Krishna Chandra Thakur throughout his life was very much meticulous to this cult. He was born in 1916 and died 10 years back. He had very little formal education but did lot for the spread of education amongst the downtrodden. He was a man of scientific thought and knowledge and a well believer in the rationalism. He joined B.S.P. as soon as this political party was formed by Sahib Kanshi Ram for making the society vertical to horizontal.

Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Bay Area ( California) invited Dr. Ronki Ram, Chairperson of Department of Political Science at Panjab University ( Chandigarh), to deliver a lecture on the Teachings of Bharat Ratan Baba Sahib Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and the rise of Dalit Consciousness in Punjab at Motel Holliday Inn, Fremont (California) on the evening of June 1, 2008. The lecture was arranged with the help of the Editor-in-Chief (Prem Kumar Chumber) of the www.ambedkartimes.com on whose invitation Prof. Sahib visited California from May 26 to June 2, 2008. Other prominent personalities who gathered at the program were Sukhdev Chopra, Prem Kumar Chumber Editor-in-Chief of www.ambedkartimes.com , Sucha Ram, Chairman of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Bay Area, Vinod Kumar Chumber President of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Bay Area, Baldev Suman, Spokesman of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Bay Area, Dashvinder Paul The General Secretary of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Pittsburg (California), Harbans Singh Mahey and K. Dr. Ronki Ram thanks the office bearer of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Bay Area for organizing his lecture on the Teachings of Bharat Ratan Baba Sahib Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and the rise of Dalit Consciousness in Punjab. He also thanked Mr. Prem Chumber Editor-in-Chief of the www.ambedkartimes.com for arranging his interaction with various Shri Guru Ravidass Sabhas, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Educational Aid Society and IBO in California. Before Dr. Ronki Ram delivered his lecture, many other prominent personalities of the region enlightened the participants about the Mission of Baba Sahib Dr. Ambedkar and the role of the Dalit Diaspora in that regard. All the prominent speakers acknowledged the tremendous contribution of Dr. Ambedkar towards the empowerment of the downtrodden and their emancipation from the insidious traps of Brahmanism. The key speaker, Dr. Ronki Ram, spoke on evil of caste and untouchability in India and the seminal contribution of Dr. Ambedkar for its resolution. He said Baba Sahib was for total eradication of this social leprosy in India. Baba Sahib said, caste is anti nation. It did not only divide society into seamless antagonistic groups but also hinder the overall development and growth of the entire country. It is in this way that caste and untouchability is not only a problem of the Dalits only but of the entire Indian society. This chronic social problem has its roots in the sacred books of the Hindus that considered to have been originated from the mouth of the Brahma. Untouchability lives within the boundaries of Hindu sacred texts known as the Dharma Shastras. Untouchability ceases to exist when these boundaries are dismantled, emphasized Dr Ambedkar in his proposed inaugural speech at the Jaat-PaatTodak Mandal (Society for the Abolition of Caste) of Lahore in 1936. However, Dr. Ambedkar was not allowed to deliver this speech, because of its anti-Dharma Shastric content. Later on Baba Sahib published it in a form of a booklet, which turned out to be the manifesto of Dalit consciousness in India emphasized Dr. Ronki Ram.

Dr. Ambedkar made his first visit to the province of Punjab first time as a member of Lothian Committee from March 31 to April 1, 1932. Baba Sahib spent three days (27-29 October 1951) in Punjab on the eve of the first general election in Independent India. Seth Kishan Dass of Boota Mandi was the host. Baba Sahib’s election’s visit to Punjab electrified the ongoing process of the generation of Dalit consciousness in the state earlier initiated by the pioneer Dalit Movement (Ad Dharm) in Punjab.

On the completion of the lecture, the office bearers of Shri Guru Ravidass Sabha Bay Area honored Dr. Ronki Ram and Mr Prem Kumar Chumber Editor-in-Chief of the www.ambedkartimes.com appreciated for his community services. The office bearer of the IBO California also honored Dr. Ronki Ram with a memento of appreciation. The program was followed by community dinner.
