SHRI GURU RAVIDASS SABHA VANCOUVER
SHRI GURU RAVIDASS SABHA VANCOUVER (CANADA)
REMEMBERED GHADRI BABA JI BABU MANGU RAM MUGOWALIA
A GREAT FREEDOM FIGHTER & FOUNDER OF THE GLORIOUS
“AD DHARM MOVEMENT IN PUNJAB” ON HIS 126TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

Babu Mangu Ram Mugowalia was the founder of the glorious Ad Dharm movement in Punjab. The Ad Dharm movement was the only movement of its kind in the Northwestern region of the country that aimed at securing a respectable place for the scheduled castes through cultural transformation and political assertion rather than seeking patronage from above. Another important feature of this movement was that it intended to bring social transformation and spiritual regeneration in the lives of the downtrodden. Although, this movement ceased to exist in its vehement form after the first general election in independent India, its emphasis on social transformation and political assertion against structures of social inequality and oppression continues to attract the Ad-Dharmis and other scheduled castes of Punjab even today.

Babu Mangu Ram Mugowalia set a clear agenda for the emancipation of the Dalits and their upliftment. The agenda aimed at restoring their lost indigenous religion and provide them with a sense of self-respect and dignity. The method to achieve this agenda was based on cultural transformation and spiritual regeneration of the indigenous people contemptuously known as Ati-Shudras. Babu Mangu Ram Mugowalia was not in favour of embracing any other existing religion. He was in favour of strengthening the Adi (the original) religion of the indigenous people of this country. His views on Hindu religion were very clear. He was of the opinion that since Dalits were not born Hindu where is the need for them to leave that religion and to embrace some other one. Babu Mangu Ram Mugowalia thought it appropriate to empower Dalits by carving out a separate Dalit identity on the basis of their indigenous religious strength (Ad Dharm). In one of his interviews to Professor Mark Juergensmeyer, a reputed scholar of Ad Dharm movement, Babu Mangu Ram said proudly “we helped give them [Ad Dharmis] a better life and made them into a Qaum. We gave Gurus to believe in and something to hope for”. Thus the real contribution of Babu Mangu Ram Mugowalia and the Ad Dharm movement was in forging a separate and independent Dalit identity in Punjab, which helped them reclaim their long lost original Adi religion and their forgotten heroes and gurus. All Ad Dharmis are indeed proud of for what Babu Mangu Ram Mugowalia did for them and are sincerely indebted to him. We all remember him reverently on his birth anniversary.

GURU RAVIDASS JI –
THE VISIONARY OF BEGAMPURA, THE ‘INCLUSIVE WORLD’
Jai Birdi, Executive Director
(Chetna Association of Canada), Surrey, BC

I feel privileged to extend my greetings to everyone on the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Ravidass Ji which fell this year on February 7.
Many know Guru Ravidass Ji and pay His Holiness high regards for being a great spiritual Father who showed the path to true salvation through meditation. Guru Ji’s Arti is a testimony to his beliefs which included having a direct relation with the Super-Being, the Creator of this and infinite number of universes. Today, the Path of Salvation through meditation is being adopted by people of various religions, sects, and secular individuals, thanks to Guru Ravidass Ji and others who established meditation and kept these practices alive over the past several thousands, if not millions, of years.
What many may not know is the revolutionary aspects of Guru Ravidass Ji and the concept of ‘Begumpura’ that His Holiness aspired millions to follow. In material context, Begampura may best be described as ‘utopia’, a concept of Karl Marx. However in spiritual sense, it could be interpreted as Heaven. Regardless of how one chooses to interpret this concept, in such a state of Begampura, there are no sorrows, no discriminations, no poverty, and everyone lives in peace with one another. In other words, it is the ‘inclusive world’.
It is probably not very important to discuss whether or not the vision of ‘Begampura’ will ever be realized. What is important is that Guru Ji prescribed this vision for people to aspire to, work towards realizing this vision through meditation- as well as through other practical means for realizing this state- both of the mind as well as for living a physical life on this planet in harmony with one another and to achieve universal peace, brotherhood, equality, and place to live without ever feeling any inferiority complexes.
One may suggest that the vision of Begampura is now also enshrined in the Great Constitution of India because the principles of equality, liberty, and fraternity are included in it.
By this gesture I am not suggesting that everyone in India now feels the vision of equality, liberty and fraternity are achieved. Similar to the vision of Begampura, the vision of equality, liberty and fraternity is also something to strive for, and work towards. Just over sixty years since the Constitution of India was adopted, we have seen India evolving into cities and villages where people of all castes and religions can live in harmony with one another on The “East Side”- a side of villages which were denied to many to live in pre-Independent India!
In situations where this is not happening or is not happing to the degree that we would like to see, we, the People of this planet, need to constantly work towards this vision and create the ‘inclusive world’.
If we are all genuine and sincere of creating the “inclusive world”, we need to work towards creating Begampura where there are no sorrows and everyone can live with dignity and without any feelings of any suppression.
If we believe that Guru Ravidass Ji was a revolutionary saint, we need to learn to challenge any practices or beliefs that are a barrier to achieving the vision of Begampura and be the role models by living a lifestyle that speaks louder than words and convey that we are all treating each other with respect and equality.
Once again, my hearties congratulations to everyone on this day and I encourage everyone, particularly to those that believe in creating the inclusive world, to step back and reflect on the teachings and philosophy of Guru Ravidass Ji and make a pledge to continue or enhance their efforts to making the vision of Begampura a reality. This will be the true homage to Guru Ravidass Ji and to others who inspired generations to achieve this vision.

Candle Light Vigil:
IN MEMORY OF HARWINDER SINGH SAROYA,VICTIM OF ALLEGED ‘HONOR-KILLING’ IN PUNJAB, INDIA
December 10th – 4:00 PM, Holland Park, 100 Ave and King George in Surrey, BC

CANADIANS DENOUNCE HONOR KILLING
DURING VIGIL HELD ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Report by: Jai Birdi

Surrey: On December 10, a group of Canadians hosted a candle light vigil at the Surrey's Holland Park in memory of Harwinder Singh Saroya, a victim of honor killing in Punjab, India. His only crime was that he loved a girl from different caste than the one he belonged and such a dare act was jut not acceptable to the family of the girl. The day for the candle light was also recognized by the UN as the International Day for the Human Rights.
The act of honor killing or as it is also known as an act of crime is no longer legal in India. However, the practice continues not just in Punjab, but throughout India. Recent evidence shows that this act also occurs in other countries such as Pakistan, the UK, the US, and Canada and it is not limited to just one religious group or one community.

In India, while Article 21 of the Constitution provides commitment that no person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to procedures established by law, the practice of honor killing continues to exist. Recognizing the scope of this issue and to strengthen its means to address this heinous practice, The Law Commission of India has proposed a new legislation, “The Endangerment of Life and Liberty Act (2011). Although this legislation will provide additional resources and strengthen means for the judiciary, whether it will be implemented successfully or not is a concern.

Surrey resident Gurnek Bangar, brother-in-law of Saroya, who was instrumental with spearheading the vigil states that even though the local police has now accepted the complaint, no one has yet been charged or arrested.

At the vigil, a number of representatives of Canadian organizations denounced the practice of honor killing and urged the Punjab Government to ensure the offenders are arrested and confidence in the justice system is restored. Among the representatives were Gurpreet Singh (host, Radio India), Kashmir Singh Dhaliwal (president, Khalsa Diwan Society), Amrit Diwana (poet), Vinay Sharma (General secretary, Laxmi Narayan Mandir, Surrey), Surinder Ranga (resident, Chetna Association of Canada), Harmesh Owan (Team Ravidssia), Jas Cheema (activist and proponent of diversity), Avtar Singh Gill (president, Taraksheel Society of Canada), Sadhu Binning (Watan Magazine), Gurmit Sathi (General Secretary, Chetna Association of Canada), Paramjit Kainth (AICES), Ratan Paul, and Ram Partap Kaler.

Participants also paid tributes to other victims of honor killing in Canada, including the following who were referenced in the a recent report of National Broadcaster, CBC: • Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu- killed in 2000 at the age if 25 , Amandeep Atwal – killed in 2003 at the age of 17, Kahtera Sidiqi – killed in 2006 at the age of 20, Aqsa Parvez – killed in 2007 at the age of 16, The Shafia family – 3 sisters (Zainab, 19; Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13) killed in 2009

PROF. CHAMAN LAL’S LECTURE DEDICATEDTO MARTYR SUKHDEV

Prof. Chaman Lal of Jawaharlal Nehru University was welcomed and honored in Surrey on May 15, the day that coincides with the birth anniversary of Martyr Sukhdev, who was also hanged along with Martyrs Bhagat Singh and Rajguru on March 23 for taking a stand against the British colonialism and invading India. The ceremony and discussions were hosted by Chetna Association of Canada, an organization with a mandate to increase awareness of social justice related issues. Along with members of this organization, other organizations including Indian Workers Association, Fraser Valley Peace Forum, Taraksheel Society of Canada, also came out to welcome and hear Dr. Lal’s views on Martyr Bhagat Singh and the contemporary Dalit issues.

During his talk, Dr. Lal made references to one of the prominent papers Shaheed Bhagat Singh had written: “The Untouchability Problem”. In this paper, Shaheed Bhagat Singh asserted the need for Dalit communities to unite together: “…ultimately the problem cannot be satisfactorily solved unless and until untouchable community themselves unite and organize”. Comparing the Dalit movement to other modern movements, Dr. Lal said these movements complement one another. He noted that the Dalit literature, for example, was a part of the same continuum as the Black literature, the women’s literature, and the progressive literature and he called all these as the “literature of the oppressed”.

When asked to explain the relevance of caste and class concepts in India, Dr. Lal acknowledged that the Indian socialist movements failed to realize the power of caste and its dominance in the Indian socio- political structure. Dr. Lal also noted that while an upper caste person could be just as poor as a Dalit, the Upper caste person will still enjoy his social status and he called this as a disease of the mind. Failure of the socialist leaders to address the caste issue led to fragmentation of the Indian society and Dr. Lal encouraged the Dalit leaders to not make similar mistakes but work together and increase the strength for the common good of the entire community.

On the issue of reservation in India, Dr. Lal noted that when the 27% reservation was added for the OBC’s (other backward castes) in India, the major backlash was faced by the scheduled castes or Dalit communities in India. Dr. Lal also reminded that Dr. Ambedkar’s goal was not reservation; it was to form a casteless society. According to Dr. Lal, this dream would be realized if Dalits, leftists, and other progressive movements started working together and understood each others’ distinct priorities and needs. In view of Dr. Lal, the Ramgarhia Society has now gained both the political and financial strength and this is one of the reasons why the Ramgarhia community is no longer the oppressed community and therefore it is important for the Dalit communities to also gain the financial and political strength.

Women activists and writers Surjeet Kalsey and Fauzia Rafique also attended the event and they were congratulated for their recent books “colors of the heart’ (by Surjeet Kalsey) and Skeena (by Fauzia Rafique. Kalsey expressed her disappointment at the lack of women’s participation and inclusion in this important event and challenged the organizers to be the change for all oppressions and the oppressed sectors.

Shehzad Khan of the Fraser Valley Peace Council noted that although the prevalence of caste is not high in Pakistan, the caste-identity and the caste based discrimination continues to be practiced in Pakistan and he encouraged for more coordination and collaboration by the oppressed sectors.

Others who shared their views and welcomed Dr. Lal included Surinder Ranga, Ajmer Rode, Ram Partap Kaler, Gurpreet Singh, Raghbir Singh ‘Sirjana’, Jai Birdi, and Gurmeet Singh ‘Sathi’. In the end, Dr. Lal presented his book on Guru Ravidass to the Chetna Association.

Sincerely,
Jai Birdi (Posted on May 31, 2011) PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR HOME PAGE
